Read the report. Then choose the next move.

Start with a decision

Start with one question. Which concerns are common? Where do shoppers stop before buying? Which products need a closer look?

Check who and what the report counts

Check the dates, location and audience. Then check what each number counts: scans, people, orders or products. One person can scan more than once.

Compare like with like

Compare similar periods. Note any changes in opening hours, campaigns or scan placement. An event week may attract different shoppers.

Follow the path to a sale

Where data is available, follow the path from scan to product match to order. Check how those steps are linked. If matched products are out of stock, fix availability first.

Turn a pattern into a small test

Make one change and record the date. You could move a product or simplify an advisor’s explanation. Compare results using the same measures. A change in sales alone does not prove what caused it.

Keep the context with the number

Include the dates, audience, sample size and metric definitions when sharing results. Note missing data. Check access permissions before sharing customer information.
